Best Singleplayer PC Games?

What are the best Singleplayer PC Games?

They can be multiplayer if they connect through a third party service (like GameSpy)
  • GovernorGovernor August 2008
So you're not asking what has the best single player, but rather which games that are designed for single player but allow a third party connection?

So you wouldn't include something like starcraft or diablo in there (even if you're just considering its single player merits) because they both have multiplayer built in?
  • ErlingErling August 2008
    Civ4? I'm a little confused per Court.

You don't want a multiplayer game unless the company poorly implemented it through some program like Gamespy? Is there a point? lol

Also see Prey, fun singleplayer imo.

i remember that there was a steam game that was like team deathmatch or whatever and it reminded me of a lot of playing quake, which reminds me a lot of doom for obvious reasons. worth checking out.

    to scabdates:

have you tried Fallout 1 or 2?

or chip's challenge (fucking windows 95 game pack)

"Fallout 2", "I Wanna Be The Guy", "Cave Story", "Bonesaw", "Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden". Fallout 2 can be downloaded as an iso, and all the others are freeware games. If more is needed, ask.

I thought S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was pretty cool. They have a new one coming out. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky or something.

I also really enjoyed Return to Castle Wolfenstein a few years ago.

STALKER was a great game but since I got it through steam, I couldn't use any of the mods like repairing equipment, but other than that, getting the best ending almost made me cry.

I'm not buying the game so I'm unlikely to have luck with Battle.net or any other multiplayer implement.

If it's still got a good single player campaign (i.e. WC3) then it's fine to suggest.

    Kotor.
  • GovernorGovernor August 2008
In which case, starcraft and diablo have incredible single players.
  • Black+BalloonBlack Balloon August 2008
Starcraft and its expansion have the best crafted RTS single-player campaigns ever. Ever.

And I've played a lot of RTS games.

    fucking pussies.

BEST SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN(S) OF ALL TIME: C&C: Red Alert

Runner up: Mech Commander (get gold so that it's updated, i think it's actually free from the original publishers)

I can play those two games' single player again and again.

some other worthy single player campaigns: call of duty 4 (if your comp can run it), medal of honor: allied assault, heroes of might and magic 3 (2's campaign is all right, but it's too unbalanced. 4 and 5 are disasters), company of heroes (if you like theatrics).
  • NunesNunes September 2008
Red Alert was available free to download earlier this week (officially, by EA)

I'll look to see if it still is.

edit: no dice. 1 day only thing.
