All you do is bitch about everything even if you're not involved with it, learn to keep your opinions to yourself especially when they are unnecessary.

If you can't take someones opinion about something over the net, you need to re-evaluate your life. I was saying what I thought. I am not going to say "OMFG!!!! IT IS AMAZING!", I am giving my honest opinion, and until I see otherwise, I will keep that opinion.

Now, I hate on xemplar more than anybody on the planet, and I'll have to call you out on this.

Darkfall is not some new amazingly innovative insanely awesome game. Get over yourself. Game is fail, trailer is fail. Move along, drive through.

    So my video impressions:

Gotta agree with Xemplar, and I don't know why you're biting his head off; it DOES looks choppy. The mount animations were fucking amazing, but the player animations were crap. Combat, movement, and especially weapon swings seemed incredibly fast based for a game where you're supposed to dodge and block in real time. Combat was essentially one big cluster fuck, and 1v1 was people circle strafing spamming attack. Overall I didn't find that impressive, but who knows how it actually plays and what it feels like in game.

Graphics (though sub par) were good enough, because I know they want to be able to have hundreds of people on screen at once without making our machines melt. They clearly learned from AoCs mistake(s) there. That said, there has to be SOME form of happy medium. After the 30th layered 2d fireball explosion I was wondering if I was watching a trailer for a 10 year old game. The lack of health bars and any indications of damage on ships and walls also makes sieges and naval warfare look terrible because things go from being perfectly fine to being gone.

One thing that I found just plain missing from the vid was mounted archery, which disappoints me a bit. Hopefully they just didn't get a chance to put it in the video and it is in the final product.

The world looks very nice and big, which I like. Cities looked amazing, as did the ships. That little fishing boat made me happy, as did the mounts dieing out from under people. I loved the VAST array of armour and weapons in the video. Practically everything was different, which was great. Not too sure about the whole floating siege engine thing, but hey, that's a personal dislike.

Overall my hopes for this game remain as high as ever. Here's hoping it proves to be amazing.

Some things look awsome, some don't... I think overall we'll have to wait and see who gets into the beta to see what stage the game is really at.
  • JeddHamptonJeddHampton August 2008
I thought it looked pretty good. The magic animations and such were pretty disappointing, but the models weren't bad. Let's see how it goes.

OK. I can understand the no version for MAC thing. As a software developer, I think it demonstrates completely irresponsible development planning, and as a realist I think it is stupid for such a small company (that will need to overcome massive hurdles to become even moderately successful) to alienate so many people when they simply don't have to, but it happens. Fine.

But windows media player? What the fuck? They couldn't have chosen one of the many other far superior [universal] video types for their video? Even when I used windows every day I thought wmv was awful.
  • xemplarxemplar August 2008
Watch it like I did in parts on YouTube!..Though that did take way longer...After seeing the full video, I still say its a little choppy, but overall, especially the whole "lets take over a ship and kill everyone on it" concept is pretty cool.

Not specifically what he said about the game, I know the game is choppy and is made to be played on simple system. In fact, I figured it obvious that everyone already knew this isn't some uber-beautiful looking game. It's been in development for what, seven years now? Of course the graphics are not going to be up-to-par with anything to date, but that's not the point of this game.

I was drunk at the time and in my drunken state I came to the conclusion that I hate Xemplar and everything about him, it just happened to be in this topic that I vocalized it. I actually rather regret posting it, I try to keep my flaming in private so I'm sorry, but I still stand by what I said because most posts by Xemplar carry some kind of complaint with it.

I am really disappointed with the gameplay video. I've never put a ton of value on graphics when they bog down a game's performance, but I also appreciate a well developed world in an MMO. If we're not going to have life or status bars on top of things we can attack, then it just makes sense that there would be some sort of visual indicator to identify how damaged our enemy is. That's why health bars were added to games in the first place -- to make up for the fact that our technology wouldn't support wasting resources to render secondary shit like that. But as many new games have demonstrated, our computers can handle it.

Now, if we're talking about a battle that has hundreds or thousands of people engaged, the extra resources it would take to render a crumbling wall or hacked up bodies would probably bring the game to a halt, but let's be realistic. Aventurine doesn't have the marketing capability, fan base, or even the general internet buzz necessary for the game to become ridiculously successful like World of Warcraft. And their "anything goes" philosophy, while it sounds extremely appealing to people like us, will really alienate a massive amount of gamers that like the structure and repetition involved with other MMOs. This game will be moderately populated at best, so the very idea that there are any long-term expectations of massively-epic battles is just wishful thinking.

Having a wall of a fortification go from pristine to instantly disappeared as the people on top of it gracefully float to the ground isn't acceptable in an MMO in 2008 (probably 2009 in darkfall's case). The intro to game programming course at my alma matter produced better looking results than that, and most of those students were borderline retards. If "Myth" could imitate something that looked kind of like realistic physics in 1997, any serious game venture should be able to do the same more than a decade later.

I haven't given up hope, but if the game is released in the condition in that video, it will lose a previously fervent supporter in me.

I have to agree with Court. the videos to me leave much to be desired for....but i refuse to give up hope. I havent been into any computer game more than i was Ultima Online, and have been longing for a game of similar nature to be released. This game has made promises they have vowed to keep as far as gameplay....not graphics. The game has been in development for 7 years or so, so im not expecting much in the graphics department, and im willing to take the lack of pretty graphics for the gameplay i have been missing for years.....just my take on it though.
  • JeddHamptonJeddHampton September 2008
I completely agree that there needs to be a way to see damage being done to structures, at least. It seems to necessary in a game where attacking structures and ships is an event that groups are to participate in.
