go to labs and turn on multiple inboxes. The message part of the window is split in half, and down the right side you can set up to 6 custom searches/listings and show as many or few emails as you like per search.
if you get shit ton of emails from a listserv or something else that you want or need but that clutter up your inbox, filter them to 'archive,' ie skip the inbox but not be deleted, and make one of the side panels show them. soooo much win
